Lewis Hamilton ‘sorry’ over boy racer stunt

Lewis Hamilton 25/08/2010 Lewis Hamilton has apologized for carrying out a Fast And The Furious-style street burnout in Australia and been fined AUD$500. Lewis, 25, has now been fined the maximum amount possible under Aussie law for his so-called “hoon” antics in a top-of-the-range Mercedes just before the Melbourne Grand Prix in March. Melbourne magistrate Clive Alsop, who has just imposed the fine, called his stunts “immature and dangerous”. He added, “This is about somebody in a responsible position behaving like a hoon.” In a written apology to the court, Lewis, who admitted improper use of a motor vehicle, said, “I very much regret my momentary lapse of judgement. “I fully accept that I am a public figure and I consider that I have a duty to act as a role model to youngsters, particularly in relation to road safety matters.” Despite the fine, no conviction was recorded after defence lawyer Sandip Mukerjea argued a conviction could affect Lewis’ entry to the US to see his Pussycat Dolls girlfriend, Nicole Scherzinger. British-born Lewis lives in Switzerland.
