Lewis Hamilton hopes McLaren come up with some new ideas after title blow in Hungary
That task is made trickier by the fact that the sport has entered its summer lockdown, with McLaren’s factory doors having shut for two weeks. “I am sure while the engineers are away on the beach, they will have their notepads out and be thinking of ideas even though they are holiday,” Hamilton said. “I have to believe they will find something. I hope that the geniuses that we have can figure out what is not working with our car. “If I was to sit here and say I am confident I will win the world championship that would not be right. But I have to remain optimistic. I have enough in me to win the championship but whether we will have the package to deliver, I can’t answer. We just have to keep working. We are hanging on for dear life.” Hamilton was nearly two seconds slower than Red Bull’s Sebastian Vettel during qualifying last weekend, which was largely explained away by the flexing properties of their rivals’ front wing. Clarification was sought from the sport’s governing body, the FIA, which has now made the tests for such parts more stringent. However, Webber warned in the aftermath to Sunday’s race that McLaren were barking up the wrong tree by questioning the legality of the device, saying they were panicking due to “getting destroyed” on track. “It’s like everything else which constantly comes up,” Webber said. “Our guys have broken their balls to design a car in the spirit of the regulations, and every time we are tested by the FIA we pass. When people don’t like what they see on the stopwatch, they have to justify their own positions, and when there’s pressure on people to perform and they’re getting destroyed, that’s how it is. “McLaren incorporated the F-duct, which is a sensational idea. We’ve turned the world upside down to try and do that which is not without our resource difficulties. That’s Formula One.” Five Filters featured article: “Peace Envoy” Blair Gets an Easy Ride in the Independent. Available tools: PDF Newspaper, Full Text RSS, Term Extraction.
