Hamilton targeted for V8 race

Lewis Hamilton could end up taking in a round of the V8 Supercar Championship in 2011, according to TeamVodafone boss, Roland Dane. According to reports by goldcoast.com.au, Hamilton was in the frame to compete on the Gold Coast this season. However a clash with the inaugural F1 grand prix in Korea on October 24 ruled that out. “I’d get Lewis next year if the timing is right and I can get Vodafone to come up with the dollars,” Dane said yesterday during official testing at Queensland Raceway. Earlier this week, it was announced that the annual V8 Supercar round at Surfers Paradise will take on a new look this year as, in a massive coup for the Gold Coast, Queensland’s biggest event will be entirely re-branded and transformed into the ‘Gold Coast SuperCarnivale’. As part of that the event will become an endurance round, joining the prestigious L&H 500 at Phillip Island and Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 – and each V8 Supercar team will include an international co-driver. Former Gold Coast winner Scott Pruett, podium finisher Alex Tagliani, reigning Le Mans 24 Hour winner David Brabham, and former F1 and Champ Car stars Mark Blundell and Christian Fittipaldi have already signed up. “V8 Supercars will chip in something for the drivers and the teams can top that up if they want a particular driver,” Dane explained when asked how it will work. “But we have to have drivers that fit the bill with talent and profile – I’d love to get Hamilton but I’m not thinking about next year just yet.” Meanwhile, Dane added that a lot of international drivers have been in touch about the event, including former Scuderia Toro Rosso F1 man and multiple Champ Car World Series champion, Sebastien Bourdais. “I can tell you the sort of guys being spoken to. There’s Sebastien Bourdais and Ivan Muller for a start and you’ll probably find a couple of other high-profile blokes currently racing in the States,” he summed-up.
