Schumacher claimed yesterday that he was happy to blink first as the two heavyweights vied for position on the last day of testing. But at one point I felt it was harming my own work a little bit, so I gave way and let him do what he wanted to do – so I could do what I wanted to do.’ It may have handed Hamilton, the 2008 world champion, a psychological edge. The speed of his McLaren, which gave him the fastest time of the week, is certainly cause for optimism. Yet the consensus puts four teams close together at the head of the field: Ferrari, McLaren, Red Bull and Schumacher’s Mercedes team. Speed demons: Hamilton shares a joke with former Arsenal ace Thierry Henry On Friday Schumacher wrote off his team’s chances of competing for victory in Bahrain, but he finished the weekend with new-found confidence. ‘I have looked at the data again and I think we can be up at the front,’ he said. ‘It is not as negative as I thought before.’ The leading quartet will all have upgrades for the opening race, making it a tantalisingly competitive start to what is expected to be a vintage season.
