Lewis Hamilton the ‘strongest driver’ on the Formula One grid, says Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso

One to beat: Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso rates Mercedes’ new driver Lewis Hamilton Photo: GETTY IMAGES By Tom Cary, F1 Correspondent in Madonna di Campiglio 1:03PM GMT 17 Jan 2013 [embedded content] In a press conference full of little digs and intriguing remarks in Italy on Thursday, Ferrari’s two-time world champion refused to be drawn on whether or not that meant McLaren would pose less of a threat in 2013. However, his comments regarding the potency of the 2008 world champion, who he predicted would “win races” at Mercedes this year, left little doubt that that is exactly what he feels. Alonso is a dab hand at this media lark. As canny off the track as he is on it, some of the his more pointed remarks towards the end of last season prompted Red Bull’s motorsport advisor Helmut Marko to accuse the Spaniard of playing political games. He feigned innocence when questioned on that score at Wrooom, Ferrari’s pre-season media knees-up in the Italian Dolomites. “I do not think I am very good at that [playing politics]. I simply drive cars,” Alonso smiled, before offering a withering little put-down of his own. “They [Marko's comments] were a bit mixed up, without any real control. So I do not think we should pay too much attention to those statements.” No, Alonso knows exactly what he is saying, which is why it is safe to assume that his comments regarding Hamilton were far from throwaway remarks. “I do not know who will be my main opponent for this season,” the 31 year-old said, “but as for strongest opponent, who is strongest driver? “My answer is Hamilton. It was true last year, it is true this year. “It is a personal opinion, not political, not to make people think something. Who is the strongest opponent, the strongest driver on grid? “Who is the one you have to keep an eye on? It is Hamilton – and it will still be Hamilton next year.” Alonso later allowed that Vettel “deserved” his three titles, but the Spaniard’s constant talking-up of Hamilton over Vettel – and vice-versa – must surely irritate the German, for all his trophies. Vettel wants to be seen as a great driver,…

Lewis Hamilton Records Tracks With U.k. Rapper Angel

15 January 2013 Racing driver Lewis Hamilton is following in the footsteps of his singer girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger by laying down tracks in a recording studio. The British Formula 1 ace has been working with U.K. rapper Angel and two producers, Midi Mafia and Eric Bellinger, who writes tracks for R&B star Chris Brown. However, a representative for Hamilton insists fans waiting for him to release the material will be disappointed as he only records to unwind, according to British newspaper The Sun. A source tells the paper, “Lewis has been spending a lot of his spare time in the studio. His vocals have been impressive.” Hamilton took to his Twitter.com page on Monday (14Jan13) to share a series of snaps with his followers, showing the foursome hard at work in the studio. Lewis Hamilton takes a hip-hop pit stop to lay down some tracks

HAVING LEWIS HAMILTON in the studio is vital for any recording artist – especially the hip-hop mob. If you need someone to nip out for supplies, there are few quicker than the F1 ace at completing the round trip. The Mercedes driver was snapped in the studio this week with London rapper ANGEL. They have been working with two producers, MIDI MAFIA and ERIC BELLINGER, a writer for CHRIS BROWN. A source said: “Lewis has been spending a lot of his spare time in the studio. His vocals have been impressive.” Lewis’s people keep telling us he records to unwind and has no plans to release anything, which is fair enough. Sportsmen turning to music is always dangerous. The Sun’s IAN WRIGHT had a go, as did VINNIE JONES. And let’s not forget GLEN HODDLE and CHRIS WADDLE. Ooft. Lewis Hamilton headstart in 2014 with Mercedes under new engine regulations

By Simon Cass PUBLISHED: 18:22 EST, 11 January 2013 | UPDATED: 18:22 EST, 11 January 2013 Mercedes are confident they can hand Lewis Hamilton a headstart over the competition when radical new engine regulations come into force in the 2014 season. The coming campaign will be the last featuring normally aspirated 2.4-litre V8s with 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 units replacing the current power plants. And while the widely held belief is that Hamilton will struggle to match the pace of former team McLaren along with Red Bull and Ferrari in his debut year with Mercedes, his new team are battling to be ahead of the game when it comes to 2014. Jumping ship: Hamilton (left) will race for Mercedes this year As the works team, Mercedes car designers are already well down the road of working with the power plant manufacturers – a scenario which could hand Hamilton a healthy advantage over customer team McLaren who are expected to continue their engine association with the German car company beyond the coming campaign.Speaking at the launch of their new ‘power unit’ at their High Performance Powertrains facility in Brixworth, Northamptonshire, managing director Andy Cowell said of Mercedes’ potential advantage in the development race: ‘It is time, and time is critical.’ Hamilton has already visited the facility and is understood to be taking a keen interest in the development of the lean and green design which he hopes can power him to glory. However, with Ferrari also having the advantage of making their own engine and Renault likely to throw their weight behind Red Bull, Cowell conceded there is scope for one of their rivals to pull a rabbit out of the hat when it comes to raw power. Headstart: The V6 engine that Mercedes have been developing ‘We are trying to get on with our development programme, and we will do the best we can,’ he said. ‘Of course, when there are significant rule changes there is a risk somebody spots an opening and others don’t.’ One thing that Cowell is confident about is the fears that fans will be disappointed by the noise of the new power unit compared to the V8 howl are unfounded, claiming the V6 will be ‘loud, but sweeter sounding’.He added: ‘I had the privilege of standing in a test cell the first time it was run and I had a big smile on my face. The sound is…

Aw: Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton tweet loved-up pictures from their romantic getaway

If long distance relationships were a thing that needed advertising, Nicole Scherzinger and Lewis Hamilton would be the faces of it. Imagine it: Nicole storms down a runway towards the camera, before saying “love”. Cut to Lewis getting out of a car and whispering: “love”. Then the two of them say “love” down the phone to each other over Skype. That is the advert. You can have that concept for free. Anyway the pair have taken some time out from their busy schedule of ‘appearing in adverts that only exist in our imagination’ to enjoy some actual time in each other’s actual company. And then post pictures of it on the Internet. They also tweeted this, while we were all at WORK Bowling “Me and my girl @nicolescherzy bowling on my bday,” Lewis said, while wearing a big badge that said ‘birthday boy’, in between blowing out candles on his Colin the Caterpillar cake. “Been a great day, training in the morning, dune buggying all day after.” He also did a smiley face. The pair enjoyed an extended break together over the Christmas and New Year period, after spending more time apart than they’d like to this year thanks to Nicole’s X Factor commitments. They spent the festive period with Nicole’s family in Hawaii before jetting off for a winter sports holiday to celebrate Lewis’ birthday. Also bowling, don’t forget the bowling. The most glamorous of celebrity pursuits. Stewart: Risky move for Hamilton

PlanetF1 –  Sir Jackie Stewart believes Lewis Hamilton is taking a risk moving to Mercedes but understands it’s what he needs to do to “grow up”… Sir Jackie Stewart believes Lewis Hamilton is taking a risk moving to Mercedes but understands it’s what he needs to do to “grow up”. Last year Hamilton confirmed he would be ending his 14-year association with McLaren and heading to Mercedes for the 2013 F1 season. The Brit’s decision has divided many in the paddock with only time telling whether or not he has made the right choice. “It’s a risk,” Stewart told Metro. “McLaren are in the business of Formula One. Major carmakers come and go. There’s a risk if the Silver Arrows are not successful, it’s just a five-minute board decision [to cancel the programme]. “Maybe it’s a risk worth taking, and I do understand Lewis’ psyche. There’s an element of him wanting to grow up, he’s no longer a little boy in karting. “In some areas he felt that’s how he was treated [at McLaren]. It’s an emotional decision but it may not prove to be the right one.” As for his thoughts on last season, the triple World Champ believes Fernando Alonso was the standout driver. Unfortunately for him, Ferrari was not the standout team. “I thought Fernando Alonso performed exceptionally all year, given his Ferrari was not particularly competitive. “However, you have to say [Red Bull's chief technical officer] Adrian Newey and Sebastian Vettel were the best package. I would have been happy with either winner.” But while the title fight was an intriguing one, Sir Stewart says his highlight was “Kimi Raikkonen winning in Abu Dhabi. It was a tremendous comeback year for him”. Lewis Hamilton goes bowling with Nicole Scherzinger

By Simon Cass PUBLISHED: 05:30 EST, 8 January 2013 | UPDATED: 05:55 EST, 8 January 2013 Birthday-boy Lewis Hamilton took time out from his gruelling training regime to enjoy a spot of ten-pin bowling with long-term girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger as he gears up for his first season Mercedes. Hamilton celebrated turning 28 on Monday with the pop star and X-Factor judge but many believe he has his work cut out if he is not to strike out with his new team after turning his back on McLaren. In gear: Lewis Hamilton posted picture of him with girlfriend Nicole Scherzinger The 2008 world champion is pulling out of the stops to ensure he is in tip-top condition for the daunting task of turning Mercedes into frontrunners by working out in Colorado’s Rocky Mountains. Hamilton will then spend time at the simulator at Mercedes’ base in Brackley, Oxfordshire later this month before finally getting behind the wheel of his new machine for real in early February at the first pre-season test in Jerez, Southern Spain. After just two further tests in Barcelona, Hamilton and the rest of the Formula One circus head down under to Australia for the 2013 season opener in Melbourne on March 17. Under pressure: Hamilton will have his work cut out after leaving McLaren for Mercedes Damon Hill expects the coming campaign to be another tightly contested affair. ‘In the old days there was only ever one team worth driving for, so you had the two best guys in the same team fighting over attention,’ said the 1996 world champion. ‘Now you have more than one team and four guys with their own teams. You could look at 2013 like this: Jenson Button’s got McLaren, Lewis has got Mercedes, Fernando Alonso’s got Ferrari, Sebastian Vettel’s got Red Bull, and Kimi Raikkonen’s got Lotus. The reality of the situation is that any of them could win.’ ends This entry passed through the Full-Text RSS service — if this is your content and you’re reading it on someone else’s site, please read the FAQ at fivefilters.org/content-only/faq.php#publishers.
